Privacy policy

Your privacy, plainly.

Version 1.1 · updated October 16, 2026 · Français

1. Who we are

The data controller, within the meaning of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, Regulation (EU) 2016/679), is [to be completed: operator name], [to be completed: postal address]. This policy covers the Newsbike app (iPhone, iPad and CarPlay) and this website, www.newsbike.app.

For anything about your data, write to privacy@newsbike.app. We read it, a person answers, and we reply within one month at the latest.

2. In short

  • No account. We never ask for your name, your email address or a password.
  • No tracking, no advertising, no analytics, in the app or on this website. No cookie is set, so there is no cookie banner.
  • To make your brief we receive your language and time zone. Local weather is part of Custom Brief: only a subscriber who turns it on sends an approximate location (or a city) and units. A free listener never sends a location.
  • If you subscribe to Custom Brief, we keep the choices you made (topics, countries, sports, stocks, voice) so the brief can be ready in the morning. You can delete them in the app.
  • Payments are handled entirely by Apple. We never see your card or your Apple Account.

3. What we process, why, and on what legal basis

WhenDataPurposeLegal basisKept
You open the app and ask for today's briefLanguage of your phone, time zone, the day, and your IP address, which reaches our server with any requestChoosing and delivering the right brief (language, edition, "today" where you are); keeping the service securePerformance of the service you asked for (Art. 6(1)(b)); our legitimate interest in security (Art. 6(1)(f)) for the IP addressThe request itself is not stored. The server's access log, which contains the IP address, is kept 14 days
You have Custom Brief and turn on local weather (free listeners cannot: they hear the world's weather and nothing about where they are is sent)An approximate location: the app sends coordinates, and our server rounds them to a tenth of a degree (about 10 km) before using them. Or the name of a city that you typed. And your units (°C or °F)Writing the weather chapter for your areaYour consent (Art. 6(1)(a)), given in the iOS location prompt or by typing the city. You can withdraw it at any time by turning weather off in Settings or in iOSThe brief for an area is shared with other listeners of the same area and is deleted after 14 days. It is filed under the rounded area and the place name, never under your name or device
You subscribe to Custom BriefApple's signed proof of your subscription, from which we take an identifier of the subscription (not your Apple Account) and its expiry dateChecking that you are subscribed, and delivering what you pay forPerformance of the contract (Art. 6(1)(b))While the subscription is active, plus 7 days

The IP address is shortened before it is written to the log

The text of a brief is written from public news sources and contains nothing about you. Neither your IP address nor any identifier of yours is ever put in a request to the companies that write and voice the brief.

4. What we never do

  • We do not create accounts, profiles of your behaviour or advertising identifiers, and we do not use cookies or similar trackers.
  • We do not use analytics or crash-reporting services that identify you, in the app or on this site.
  • We do not sell, rent or share your data for advertising, and we do not use it to train artificial-intelligence models.
  • We take no automated decision about you that has legal or similarly significant effects (Art. 22 GDPR). The only automation is choosing which brief to play.
  • This website loads nothing from another company: its fonts, images and scripts come from our own server, so your visit is not disclosed to a third party.

5. Who receives data

We use a few service providers (processors) who act only on our instructions:

ProviderRoleWhat it receives
[to be completed: hosting company and address]Hosting of our serverAll the data described above, in the servers located in [to be completed: country of the servers]
OpenAIWrites the briefInstructions and the topics to write about (and, for Custom Brief, the chosen topics, countries, sports and symbols). No identifier, no IP address, no location finer than a place name
ElevenLabsSpeaks the briefThe text to read aloud. Nothing that identifies you
Open-MeteoWeather forecasts and city searchFrom our server, never from your phone: coordinates rounded to about 10 km, or the city name you typed
AppleDistribution of the app, payments and subscriptions, and notifications on your deviceGoverned by Apple's own privacy policy. We receive from Apple only the signed proof of a subscription, described above

Authorities may receive data if the law requires it. We do not otherwise give your data to anyone.

6. Transfers outside the European Union

Some of these providers are based in, or process data in, the United States. Where that is the case, the transfer relies on the European Commission's adequacy decision for the EU–US Data Privacy Framework if the provider is certified under it, and otherwise on the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the Commission, with the safeguards our contract with each provider describes. You can obtain a copy of these safeguards by writing to privacy@newsbike.app.

7. How long we keep data

The table in section 3 gives the period for each kind of data. The numbers come straight from our server's settings: the shared briefs and weather files for 14 days, a subscriber's saved choices for the life of the subscription plus 7 days, and access logs for 14 days. After that, the data is deleted automatically.

8. Your rights

You have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what was done before. You may also give instructions about what happens to your data after your death.

  • In the app: Settings → "Remove my saved choices" deletes what we hold about a Custom Brief subscription. Turning off local weather in Settings or in iOS stops any location being sent.
  • By email: write to privacy@newsbike.app. Because we have no account, we cannot tell who you are from your email address. To find your data we may ask for the original transaction identifier of your subscription (shown by Apple in your purchase receipt). We do not ask for identity documents.
  • We answer within one month. It is free.

If you think we have not respected your rights, you may complain to a data protection authority, in particular that of your country of residence, your workplace or the place of the alleged infringement. The list of European authorities is at edpb.europa.eu. In France it is the CNIL (cnil.fr). We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

9. Security

Connections to our server and to this website are encrypted (HTTPS). Subscriptions are verified against Apple's signature. What a subscriber types is reduced to a closed list of values before it is used, and access to the server is restricted. We will notify the competent authority within 72 hours of learning of a breach that endangers your rights, and you too where the risk is high.

10. Children

Newsbike is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their data. Since the app needs no account and collects almost nothing, a parent who has a concern can write to us and we will delete what we hold.

11. Changes to this policy

When we change what we do with your data, we change this page first and update the version and date above. If a change matters (a new purpose, a new kind of data), we will say so in the app before it applies. Earlier versions are available on request.
